Community profiles - Town of
Fogo
Community Scan:
During the fall of 2003 the
Town of Fogo conducted a household survey covering a
number of areas related to economic development. The response to this
survey, while
not representative of 100% of households in the
town, does
give an indication of the prevailing concerns
and ideas of
local residents, as well as some indication of
current
demographics. The following graphs were developed from
the 2003 survey.
When asked if they expected
to be living in Fogo in the next
five years 145 respondents said
yes and 14 said no. Some
of the reasons given for having
to leave were as follows. The graph on the right below show
where respondents felt there was the most potential for local
development.
Local Business
Development:
The
survey also asked
whether local residents had considered starting their own
businesses, and 37 people indicated that they have. Areas which
have been considered are as follows in the first graph below.
Unfortunately, less than half of these respondents (21) were
still considering starting their own
businesses at the time of
the survey. Of these 21 almost all
felt that they would benefit
from: help with funding proposals;
help with incorporation; and
consultant services. The second graph below shows some of the
reasons why local residents are no longer considering starting a
business.
