Also a new trail, approximately 2 km, from the Lookout on the North Side of Fogo to a viewing platform on Fogo Head – 338’ Fogo Head going up.jpg (51360 bytes) above sea level – overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It will connect with the trail to Brimstone Head. By the summer of 2005 the Town will have one of the best walking trails in Newfoundland.

To continue this theme of making Fogo a cleaner and better place to live and visit, our town has entered a national competition "Communities in Bloom".

COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM

People, Plants and Pride, Growing Together.

Communities in Bloom is a non-profit Canadian organization Picture Plant committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of a friendly competition.

National beautification programs have flourished in Europe, included England, France and Ireland, for decades, and were the inspiration for Town Flower Garden Communities in Bloom.  It began in 1995 with 29 Canadian communities and has grown to more than 100 national and hundreds of municipalities registered in the provincial editions.

Communities in Bloom promotes involvement and action by citizens of all ages, the municipal government, local organizations and businesses.  The program strives to improve the tidiness, appearance and visual appeal of Canada's neighbourhoods, parks, open spaces and streets through the imaginative use of flowers, plants and trees.  A focus on environmental awareness and preservation of heritage and culture is also an integral part of its success resulting in an improved quality of life.

In 2008 the Town of Fogo entered in the Communities in Bloom Competition with 8 other town's in the same population category
(1 -1000) across Canada.  We scored 5 blooms and received 2008 Communities in Bloom recognition for our Marconi Wireless Interpretive Centre. In 2007scored 4 blooms out of 5 and received special recognition for Culture & Heritage.  In 2006 scored 4 blooms out of 5 and received special recognition for Interpretative Trail Signage.

HELP TO PRESERVE
FOGO'S HISTORY

The Town of Fogo and the Fogo Tourism Committee are interested in locating artifacts and photos which have a historical significance to the community.

We are particularly interested in items from Earle & Sons and Company, Layman / Newfoundland and Labrador Export Company, the house on Wigwam Point, the Marconi Station or any other historic structure which is, or was, a part of Fogo.

We are very interested in obtaining, or borrowing for duplication, any old photographs which show the Town, local buildings or people who lived here.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.  Please note, we are not asking for donations of artifacts and photos unless owners of same are so inclined.  We would like the opportunity to make reproductions of  photos and/or take photographs of artifacts.

All items will be suitably displayed at an appropriate and secure location within the Town.  All who contribute to this project will be given recognition for their contribution within the display.

For more information please contact us online info@town-fogo.ca  or you may call the Town Office at (709)266-2237 or
