Brimstone Head

Brimstone Head is no doubt one of the foremost attractions Fogo Island has to offer.  There is abundant local folk lore surrounding this magnificent geographic structure.  At one time older generations believed Brimstone Head was an active volcano.  It is said that at the foot of Brimstone Head there is a water-filled hole, just back from the shore line, that has no bottom. Another belief is that if one were to drop a piece of lead, on a long line, down this hole, at a certain depth the lead will melt.  Folklore also has it that there are caves high up on the water side of the head where pirates would hide their treasures.   These pirates would  kill a crew member and bury him with the treasure so that he could guard it.

Brimstone Head is considered by the Flat Earth Society to be one of the four corners of the earth.  The Town of Fogo has declared Brimstone Head as the capital of the Flat Earth.  The other corners are a Greek Island of Hydra, the Bermuda Triangle and Papua, New Guinea.

The trail to the top will take you 275 feet above sea level and offer a ocean view comparable to anywhere in the world.  Like all other walking and hiking trails that Fogo has to offer, it is well maintained.  Here you will get a panoramic view of the ocean for miles around.  You can watch for whales and different species of birds, or view hundreds of majestic ice burgs in season.  On a clear day one can see neighboring communities on Change Islands and Twillingate Island.

Brimstone Head Park is also the site of Fogo's annual Brimstone Head Folk Festival.  The festival was started in the 1980's.  The idea originated from two school teachers who were living in Fogo at the time - Michael Henry and Jane Whitten.  The festival is held each year during the second weekend in August and it attracts tourists from all over the world.  The Brimstone Head Park has a stationary stage (photo below left), public washrooms and a RV parking ground.  It also has an excellent camp ground with various areas for boil ups.  Behind the performing stage there is a beach with a swimming area for those who are brave enough to swim in the Atlantic ocean.

The Festival is a must for lovers of traditional music. Performers are mainly local musicians however a number come from off the Island.  Each year the Fogo Island Folk Alliance hires a headliner for the festival.  Bands that have performed here over the years include: Ron Hynes, the Navigators, the Punters, Rankin Street (now Great Big Sea), and Simani. The success of the Brimstone Head Folk Festival is largely due to the work of volunteer groups involved - the Folk Alliance, the Fogo Tourism Committee, the Fogo Harbor Lion's Club, the Fogo Volunteer Fire Department, The Town of Fogo and local church organizations.

The Fogo Harbor Lions have taken on the responsibility of caring for the Brimstone Head Park. The Town of Fogo passed the park over to the Lion's in 2002. Their building is located on site and members see to the needs of visitors.  The photo to the right shows a scene from one of the earlier festivals with a portion of Brimstone Head in the background.
